Many will have grown up with linoleum as the flooring in household kitchens and bathrooms, though this Victorian invention has been used for printing for over a century, and woodblocks for many, many centuries more.

During this day-long practical workshop, you will learn from tutor Will Dyke the art of printing; from your own inspiration through to the printed art, you will learn to design and cut your own wood or lino blocks to print onto paper.  All materials you use during the day are fully sustainable, and included in the price.

Suitable for all abilities, with tuition from Will on design, lino block cutting and printing techniques, by the end of the workshop you will go home with your own printed art, and the printing block you have created so you can print more at home.

Participant Information
Each workshop is limited to 8 participants.
The workshop lasts for six hours including a break for lunch - please see refreshments below.
Whilst the workshop is inside the Great Green Barn, participants are advised to wear suitable layered clothing that you don’t mind getting grubby. Please wear closed shoes. All materials and tools will be provided.

What you can expect from this practical workshop
Learn how to design an image, render it onto a wood or lino block, and use cutting tools to carve your design. You will then ink and print your block by hand onto a selection of papers.
Your design can be original, a found image of your choosing, or based on images and prints from the selection provided.
Helpful guidance on creating an image is given. Simple methods of introducing more colours into your prints will be covered.
You can take your own hand-crafted block away after the workshop to print more at home. It will be possible to buy extra materials.

Notes on materials being used for this workshop
Blocks: We carve our woodblock designs into lime wood, and we also use traditional hessian backed lino from ‘Esdee’, which is made from natural ingredients including linseed oil, wood flour, and limestone powder.
Paper: ‘Khadi’ artists’ handmade papers from India, 100% cotton rag, which is sourced from recycled T shirt cuttings.
Printing inks: Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash Relief Ink; Linseed oil-based artist quality printing inks made for non toxic printmaking, they can be cleaned up using liquid soap, water, and vegetable oil.

Refreshments
Teas, coffees and water are included in the ticket price.
Please bring a packed lunch for the mid-workshop break.  An optional vegetarian lunch of a slice of warmed Greek Spinach & Feta pie and salad is available to pre-order at £7.50.
Please let the Great Green Barn know if you have any special dietary requirements.
