Acclaimed actor/pianist duo Christopher Kent and Gamal Khamis return to the Great Green Barn in their latest collaboration, and present a rare opportunity to hear a complete performance of one of Shakespeare’s most ravishing early solo works, interspersed with selections from Felix Mendelssohn’s hauntingly beautiful Songs Without Words.

Shakespeare’s sparkling narrative poem Venus and Adonis is a witty, transformative and ultimately moving retelling of Ovid’s classic tale, in which the goddess of love’s desire to woo the most beautiful of the mortals and waylay him from hunting eventually ends in tragedy.

Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words were composed between 1829 and 1845  and achieved almost instant popularity during and after his short lifeme. Their lilting and poignant lyricism make them ideal companion pieces for Shakespeare’s vivid tale, promising another rich and compelling recital in the company of these master story-tellers.

Christopher Kent has appeared on stage, screen and radio in a wide range of roles from Shakespeare to contemporary drama. London theatre appearances have included Cyrano de Bergerac with Robert Lindsay at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and The Government Inspector with Timothy Spall at Greenwich Theatre. Live performances of epic story-telling and poetry have been widely acclaimed.  Christopher is also one of the UK's leading voice actors and is regularly heard on commercials, documentaries, film trailers and literary recordings.
Described by The Times as a pianist with "formidable keyboard skills", Gamal Khamis first performed at the Wigmore Hall at the age of ten, and he has since appeared at Carnegie Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Sage Gateshead, as well as all over Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. He has won major prizes at the Royal Over-Seas League Music.
