For Earth’s Sake at The Great Green Barn presents Relief Stone Carving Workshop -
Plants & Flowers
with tutor Amanda Randall at the Great Green Barn
DATE & TIME Thursday 1 October 2026: 10am - 4pm Price*: £110 per person, Optional Vegetarian Lunch £8
Create a beautiful, botanical inspired relief carving to take away and display in your home or garden.
This one day workshop is a great introduction to the craft of stone carving, using trees, plants and flowers as inspiration. A simple shape or motif is drawn onto a piece of limestone, which is then carved in relief with traditional chisels and a mallet. Topics will include designing a relief, using a flat chisel to set out your design, creating the illusion of depth, making textures with a claw chisel and using a riffler to smooth your design and add detail. You can expect a good balance of theory and practical skills, as well as the support and advice of an experienced tutor, sculptor Amanda Randall. Prepared templates of leaves and flowers will be available, but you are welcome to bring along images or design sketches of your own for a square piece of stone 20 x 20cm. Bold, simple images are best, with no overlapping shapes or thin, fiddly parts. Amanda will discuss the suitability of these and help you to ensure they are practical for carving in one day.
All materials you use during the day are fully sustainable, and included in the price.

She has experience of teaching children and adults from beginners to university level and is a passionate advocate of the benefits of art and making for wellbeing. She is currently a part time carving tutor at the Burngate Purbeck Stone Centre in Dorset and the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington.
She has a degree in sculpture and has completed numerous projects and commissions, including a recent sculpture and drawing project celebrating biodiversity on Ham Lands in Richmond.
Participant Information Stone, tools, and safety equipment will be provided. Please bring an apron and wear old clothes and stout shoes which cover your toes and protect your feet. If you wear reading glasses, please bring them.
Stone carving is done standing up. If this is difficult for you, please get in touch to discuss your needs as we may be able to provide a perching stool. You will also need to be able to hold tools in both hands- a chisel in one, and a dummy (stonemason’s hammer) in the other, and to sustain gentle physical activity for the duration of the workshop.
What you can expect from this practical workshop Learn how to design a relief, using a flat chisel to set out your design, creating the illusion of depth, making textures with a claw chisel and using a riffler to smooth your design and add detail. You will be able to take your own carved block home with you. Please note this course does not include letter or numeral cutting. Refreshments Teas, coffees and water are included in the ticket price. Please bring a packed lunch for the mid-workshop break. An optional vegetarian lunch of a slice of warmed Greek Spinach & Feta pie and salad is available to pre-order at £8. Please let the Great Green Barn know if you have any special dietary requirements.
