"Powerful, tense, heartbreaking" Broadway Baby
Havisham takes the audience on a journey of the infamous jilted monster from Charles Dickens' Great Expectations... Miss Havisham. It imagines her life, reliving moments from her childhood in rural Kent, and on to London as a hopeful young woman newly arrived in a big city, and right through to the heartbreaking events of her fateful wedding day.
You are invited to explore who the real woman is... the human being behind Dickens’ most monstrous female creation.
What circumstances drove the fresh, young Miss Havisham to her unfortunate fate? Why does she wait, forever jilted, at her own decaying bridal feast? The answers to the these questions encourage new questions and open a dialogue about female representation, societal expectations and exploitation.
The story is vibrant, fast-paced, poignant and intriguing, covering themes of identity, justice and betrayal, all instantly recognisable as the themes are universal.
The story appeals to both fans of Charles Dickens as well as those new to his stories, and seeks to enhance the audience’s appreciation of literature, storytelling and creative interpretation.
